The Course

An STS course, told in a maritime voice

Science, Technology and Society is an interdisciplinary General Education course examining the dynamic interactions among scientific knowledge, technological development, and human society. For BSMarE students, shipping is the working example throughout — steam and diesel, alternative fuels, AI, autonomous ships, and maritime cybersecurity.

Course outcomes

CO 1

Explain the foundational relationships among science, technology, and society, and the historical evolution of technology, including maritime propulsion.

CO 2

Analyze the ethical, environmental, and societal implications of technological development using appropriate STS frameworks.

CO 3

Evaluate contemporary maritime transformations — automation, AI, digitalization, alternative fuels, and cybersecurity — and their consequences.

CO 4

Conduct and communicate a small-scale, evidence-based STS research project on a contemporary maritime issue.

Grade computation

Final Grade = (Class Standing × 0.50) + (Midterm Exam × 0.25) + (Final Exam × 0.25).

Class Standing = Quizzes (20%) + Learning Activities & Workbook (20%) + Research & STS Analysis (10%).
